What is the Webster Technique?

February 15, 2018

You may have heard of it in a magazine, from your midwife, a friend or maybe even on Facebook. Perhaps you've never heard of it at all, but now you're intrigued. What exactly is the Webster technique?

The Webster technique was developed in 1978 by Larry Webster, who also founded the ICPA (International Chiropractic Pediatrics Association). Dr. Webster created a method of adjusting a pregnant mother's pelvis, creating balance in the bony pelvis and surrounding muscles and ligaments. He noticed that when he used this technique for the first time, the baby who was in a breech position began to turn head down throughout his care. While Dr. Webster maintained that this technique was beneficial for all of his pregnant patients, he continued to find that a large percentage of breech babies would turn head down when the technique was applied. The majority of mothers also reported improved birth outcomes. Not surprisingly, his technique caught the attention of many in the birth community, including other chiropractors.

As time went on, the ICPA created a Webster Certification program in which they provide doctors of chiropractic with advanced training and certification in this technique. Specific chiropractic adjustments are performed in order to align the mothers pelvis and sacrum, along with an analysis of the supporting muscles and ligaments. The Webster technique is completely different from the medical procedure known as external cephalic version (ECV). At no time does a chiropractor try to change the position of a baby.

The Webster technique offers a wide variety of benefits to both the mother and the baby.

Benefits to the mother:

~ Potential for an easier pregnancy/birth by balancing the pelvis, muscles, and ligaments

~ Reduces torsion of the ligaments that support the uterus, decreasing aberrant tension

~ Likely decreases the potential for unnecessary interventions

~ Reduces interference of the mothers nervous system

~ Improves the mothers function and mobility

Benefits to the infant:

~ Allows more room for the baby to develop without restrictions

~ Offers baby the ability to move into the best possible position for birth

~ Decreased interference of moms nervous system allows better development in baby

~ When baby is properly positioned, there is a decrease in dystocia (abnormal labor, "lack of progression" of labor) and a decrease in resultant birth trauma caused by intervention

If you are pregnant, the time to get your pelvis checked by a chiropractor is now. If you're not expecting, but know someone who is, let them know about the Webster chiropractic technique. We haven't met many pregnant women who would turn away the possibility of having an easier pregnancy and birth, or a healthier, happier baby.

Dr. Weber is a member of the ICPA and is Webster Certified Chiropractor.
